The Third Day: The Day That Changed Everyday On the third day the earth received an announcement that shook heaven, hell, and history. The stone was rolled away and Jesus Christ stood alive, (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
First century Jews were living under the iron rule of the Roman Empire. Roman soldiers patrolled their streets. Taxes were heavy. Crucifixions were public warning of Romes’s authority. The Jewish people carried centuries of prophetic hope that God would send a Messiah who would restore Israel, defeat oppression, and establish God’s Kingdom. At the same time their religious world was divided. The Pharisees believed in resurrection at the end of the age, while the Sadducees denied it altogether (Act 23:8). Everyone had expectations about the future-but no one expected resurrection in the middle of history. So when Jesus was crucified it looked like Rome had won and another failed messianic movement had come to an end. Deuteronomy 21:23 said, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” To many watching, the cross seemed like proof that Jesus could not be the Messiah. But the resurrection changed everything. Because resurrection was believed to happen at the end of the age, when God would judge the world and renew creation (Daniel 12:2). Yet suddenly one man had risen ahead of everyone else. Third Day Power: On the third day the stone was rolled away, heaven announced what hell could never stop: “He is not here, for He is risen” (Matthew 28:6) The resurrection was not simply Jesus coming back to life. It was the overthrow of death itself, (Acts 2:24). The third day changed every day! Because the resurrection was not only about Christ leaving the grave-it was about resurrection power entering the world. “The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you” Romans 8:11). But the Resurrection Was Never Meant to Stay In the First Century: The same human condition that existed in Jesus’ day exists now. People were burdened by guilt, searching for meaning, afraid of death, and longing for hope. The world today has different technology but the same hungry soul. We try to bury pain under success. We numb guilt with a spectrum of distractions. We fear finality of death. In April, during the holiday season of Easter especially, we can still hear the Good News that shook Jerusalem two thousand years ago. Death is not the end. Scripture declares, “Blessed be God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3) For the first century Jew, resurrection meant God had begun restoring the world. For us today, it means the power of that restoration is available now. The third day proved something the world must never forget: life is stronger than death, mercy is stronger than judgment and the power of God can raise what we thought was gone forever. The third day was not just a moment in history. It was the day that changed every day. Prayer: Risen Lord and Messiah, we proclaim Your victory today. Let the power of Your resurrection awaken faith in every heart. Break chains, faith and restore hope, heal broken hearts, call, “Life” to dead faith, and call the captives to freedom. Let the authority of Your Spirit rise in us. Because You live, we live. Because you reign, we stand. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen
