Volunteers

Barbara Page graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She served in various school districts in the Houston area from 1959- through the 1980’s teaching Home Economics to young ladies as well as boys.

She also taught English as a second language to women from different countries. These particular women were wives of medical students at the University in Houston Texas.

In 2009, Barbara opened up her home and provided housing for Rachel Bewers, a young intern studying to become a Physicians’ Assistant.

For the past six years, Barbara has faithfully volunteered at Shiloh Ministries in Liberty Texas. Shiloh Ministries is a non-profit organization that helps men ages 17 and up recover from drug and or alcohol addictions. Shiloh takes in men from all over the USA. It is free of charge to these men.  Barbara Page provides GED tutoring to the men who enter Shiloh who have a desire to finish their high school education. At present she is tutoring several men of different ages and back ground from different parts of the USA. Steve Hunt, Michael Landry, and Beau Holland are currently receiving tutoring by Barbara Page. They are scheduled to take their GED test April 12th and 13th 2010. They look forward with great confidence in passing.  Everyone she has invested into has been successful and passed. It has given them a sense of accomplishment. This has also opened up doors for better job opportunities after they graduated and moved on from Shiloh Ministries. Many of these men had never finished anything in their lives and had previously been labeled as quitters.

Barbara states she can remember from childhood that teaching had been her dream. She finds great joy in explaining something to someone and watching the expression on their face change when they learn new things. It is shear satisfaction for her to see a student do well on a test and know that she had a part in it. She states she loves helping these men obtain their GED. They are greatly appreciative and respectful. They are eager and absorb knowledge like a sponge, realizing this is a second opportunity to get their high school diploma through the GED. She says this is not a sacrifice for her but a great pleasure that she looks forward to every week. She not only gets to teach, but she encourages and counsels these men to do great things with their lives. There is positive power in encouragement.

At age 72, Barbara continues to use her skills and abilities to inspire others to dream big. She blesses them with the gift of education and exhortation leading to healthy self-esteems.  This results in productive citizens and brighter futures. Barbara has great impact in the community of Liberty Texas and is touching the U.S.A.
